Forsyth County Recognized as a “County of Excellence” for Transportation Bond Initiative
Forsyth Countyhas been named the recipient of the 2020 County of Excellence award, presentedby the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), in the category ofinfrastructure and transportation for the County’s innovative approach toaddressing community needs with a Transportation Bond.
Duringtheir meeting Thursday, July 23, the Forsyth County Board of Commissionersrecognized the Engineering and Finance Departments for the achievement.
“We are thrilled to be recognized forthe work that has been put in place over the past six years with the bond,”said Forsyth County Director of Engineering John Cunard. “Our TransportationBond set an example for other communities to consider going forward for how tofund transportation projects and it is an option that has worked tremendouslywell for us.”
On Nov. 4, 2014, Forsyth County votersapproved an up to $200 million general obligation bond to finance a variety oftransportation projects.
Of the up to $200 million, $81 million wasproposed for projects in partnership with the Georgia Department ofTransportation, leveraging state and federal funding, with the remaining $119million proposed for County projects.
The theme of the 2020 Georgia CountyExcellence Awards was Innovation and this year’s awards honored county programsand initiatives in the areas of health care, infrastructure and transportation,public safety, sustainability and technology. Two counties, one rural and onenon-rural county, were recognized in each of the five categories.
