The start of daylight saving time is a good occasion to replace batteries

The Forsyth County Fire Department reminds citizens to change the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when they set their clocks forward an hour this Sunday, March 12.

The Forsyth County Fire Department suggests that if the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are serviceable, they should be changed every six to twelve months. Prior to replacing the batteries, review the recommendations provided by the unit’s manufacturer, and replace the units themselves every seven to ten years. It’s also important to test the alarms at least once a month by pressing the TEST button.

“The only smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that can help save a life are those that are functioning properly,” Fire Chief Danny Bowman said. “We encourage everyone to take a few minutes to check the alarms in their homes and ensure they are in full working order.”

The Fire Department also reminds citizens of the following safety precautions: 

• Install a smoke alarm on every level of the home
• Ensure smoke alarms are clean and free of dust
• Dial 911 in case of any emergency
