Flags Flying at Half-Staff in Honor of President Jimmy Carter
By executive order of Gov. Brian Kemp, the flag of the United States and the Georgia flag at County government facilities will fly at half-staff in honor of and to recognize the passing of James E. “Jimmy” Carter, former Governor of Georgia, and 39th President of the United States.
President Carter was the first Georgia native to ever serve in the nation’s highest political office, serving previously as Georgia’s 76th Governor before becoming President of the United States in 1977.
Carter, from Plains, GA, was the son of peanut farmers before earning his bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy and serving seven years as a naval officer, rising to the rank of Lieutenant.
In 1982, Jimmy Carter opened the Carter Center in Atlanta to advance international human rights, promote democracy, and improve health. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts as a world-renowned humanitarian and philanthropist.
President Carter died at the age of 100 on December 29, 2024.
Flags will be flown at half-staff throughout the State of Georgia for 30 days beginning December 30 in honor and memory of former President Jimmy Carter.
