The Forsyth County Department of Water and Sewer (FCDWS) is continuously monitoring water quality in Lake Lanier. As is customary during late summer, the County is beginning to see increased levels of naturally occurring minerals or compounds called Manganese, MIB and Geosmin. 

While these minerals or compounds are safe and not a cause for concern, they create changes to the taste, smell and appearance of our water. The FCDWS is taking proactive steps now to minimize changes to water quality by utilizing a treatment process to remove the minerals or compounds from the water supply. As the effects of this treatment process continue to equalize within the treatment plant and out in the distribution system, some customers may notice minor water quality changes such as a chlorine taste or odor.  

These changes should subside in the coming weeks and do not represent a water quality concern of any kind. Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department appreciates residents’ patience while working through this situation. Please be assured that your water is safe to use and drink, even if it may smell and taste different than normal.
