As residents set their clocks back an hour to end daylight saving time on Sunday, November 5, the Forsyth County Fire Department recommends also replacing batteries in battery-powered smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.

The Forsyth County Fire Department suggests that if the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are serviceable, they should be changed every six to twelve months.

“We recommend replacing batteries in both devices every six to twelve months,” Division Chief Jason Shivers said. “By using daylight saving time each year as a simple reminder, the task is easier to remember.”

Prior to replacing the batteries, review the recommendations provided by the unit’s manufacturer, and replace the units themselves every seven to ten years. It’s also important to test the alarms at least once a month by pressing the TEST button.

“The only smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that can help save a life are those that are functioning properly,” Fire Chief Danny Bowman said. “We encourage everyone to take a few minutes to check the alarms in their homes and ensure they are in full working order.”

The Fire Department also reminds citizens of the following safety precautions: 

• Install a smoke alarm on every level of the home

• Ensure smoke alarms are clean and free of dust

• Dial 911 in case of any emergency
