Webpage and Video Update Regarding The Gathering at South Forsyth and County-Issued Bonds Available

Forsyth County has launched a webpage and has released an in-depth video with updated information pertaining to the proposed The Gathering at South Forsyth project in south Forsyth County as well as the Nov. 5 ballot item asking for residents to approve redevelopment powers for the project.

The website, video and a printable educational flyer regarding the ballot item can be found by visiting www.forsythco.com/redevelopment-powers.

“The tool that we are asking citizens to vote on for the November referendum is a Tax Allocation District (TAD) that will draw a boundary strictly around the footprint of the proposed development and the taxes that are collected from the economic impact generated by this project will fund the payback of the bond,” said Forsyth County Manager David McKee.

During a regular meeting on Aug. 1, 2024, the Board of Commissioners approved a motion to add a referendum regarding the “exercise of redevelopment powers” to the Nov. 5, 2024, election ballot for the purpose of establishing a designated Tax Allocation District (TAD) solely on the 100.3 acres of the proposed The Gathering at South Forsyth development.

“Why is that important? If passed by voters, it would mean that all other residents and businesses outside of the 100.3-acre project would not have to pay toward the debt service of what the 20-year bond for the project, and instead the ad valorem taxes from the inside the TAD would pay that debt back.”|

In a video featured on the newly created webpage, McKee details:

  • What is ahead for the proposed project
  • How an NHL franchise being awarded to the project is necessary for any County bonds to be issued
  • How the County is expanding transportation infrastructure around the project
  • Other means of paying back the County issued bonds
  • What work is currently underway on the proposed project site
