Forsyth County, in partnership with the Atlanta Regional Commission, is undertaking a regional transportation planning study of the SR 9 corridor from SR 306 (Keith Bridge Road) to SR 369 (Browns Bridge Road).

On this page you will be able to view an initial design concept developed for the corridor, provide comments, and learn more about the initial study and feedback obtained at a February 2020 public meeting. You can find meeting boards from the February meeting by clicking here.

While this segment of SR 9 currently serves about 10,000 vehicles a day, projections into the future suggest that traffic and development growth will continue and result in over 25,000 vehicles a day in the future.  Similarly, the 2018 Forsyth County Comprehensive Transportation Plan identified the need to widen this segment from 2 to 4 lanes. 

To address this, a planning study is being conducted to proactively identify the patterns and impacts of future growth to the corridor, understand the community’s vision for the corridor, confirm the need for the widening anticipated in the Transportation Plan and establish a timeline for the implementation of short and long term improvements along the corridor.

Meeting Boards from 2.26.20 Public Information Open House

The proposed Greenway trail will begin at the end of Phase 3 of the Big Creek Greenway and will travel approximately seven miles to the Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center located on Spot Road. The proposed trail will serve as a multi-use trail and will consist of a twelve-foot wide paved path, including portions of boardwalk as well as pedestrian bridges, as necessary. The project also proposes three trailhead locations which will provide for parking and restroom facilities. In addition to the trail and trailhead construction, landscaping and other hardscape appurtenances will be provided.

The Forsyth County Bicycle Transportation and Pedestrian Walkways Plan has been developed to address and plan for increased bicycle and pedestrian facilities in and around Forsyth County.  The Forsyth County Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan was developed by the Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force, which consisted of countywide representatives, nonprofit representatives and private sector organizations. The plan was adopted in 2002.

2008 Update: The Forsyth County Bicycle Transportation and Pedestrian Walkways 2025 Plan: 2008 Update was approved and adopted by the Board of Commissioners on August 21, 2008.

2015 Update: An update to the Forsyth County Bicycle Transportation and Pedestrian Walkways 2025 Plan was approved by the Board of Commissioners December 3, 2015. The purpose of the update was to track projects completed and planned for the county, determine the effectiveness in implementation of the plan, and identify new project locations. For this update process, two public information meetings were held, followed by a public hearing which was held December 3, 2015.

How do I submit a subdivision/development and/or road name request?

Applicant must read the Forsyth County Department of Engineering Subdivision and Road Name Policy and Procedure.

Then download the Request for Road Name Approval form from the File Library and complete the form online. You may move to each field by using the F11 key. When the form is complete save it to a word file. You may then attach it to an email and forward it to Lisa Rodgers at the Forsyth County Engineering Department larodgers@forsythco.com . The form may also be faxed to (770)781-2104.

 On October 16, 2016, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners awarded the Major Transportation Plan update to Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc.. As part of the plan update, Jacobs Engineering and Forsyth County officials hosted ten (10) open house sessions in various locations throughout the county.  In addition to the open houses, the project team launched an online survey to solicit input from the county.  This public input, combined with the technical expertise of Forsyth County staff and the consultant team resulted in a list of transportation projects - as well as policy recommendations - for consideration and adoption by the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners on September 6, 2018.
